The forecast here changes a lot more between seasons than between days: from November to May you get months of sunshine in a row, and from June to October you get hot, humid days that often end in a thunderstorm. How to read the Puerto Vallarta forecast

A few local rules make the forecast more useful than it looks:

• A high rain percentage in summer is not a washed-out day. From June to October the chance of rain is often 60–100%, but the storms usually build over the mountains in the afternoon and break late in the day or at night. Mornings tend to be bright — which is why most of our tours start at 9 AM.
• "Feels like" matters more than the temperature. With humidity above 85% in the rainy season, a 30 °C (86 °F) afternoon can feel like 38 °C (100 °F). Plan the sweaty stuff early and save the afternoon for the pool or the ocean.
• The UV index is high all year. Even on cloudy days it regularly reaches 10 or more around midday. Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and a long-sleeve rash guard for water activities are not optional here.
• Wind is the number to watch for boats. The bay is calm most mornings; afternoon sea breezes pick up, especially in spring. For a smoother boat day, start early.

The pattern is simple: two seasons. The dry season runs from November to May, with almost no rain from March to May (0 mm (0.0 in) in April). The rainy season runs from June to October, and just four months — July to October — bring most of the year's rain, peaking in September with 258 mm (10.2 in).

Dry Season Weather in Puerto Vallarta (November–May)

This is the Puerto Vallarta weather that ends up on postcards: blue skies, dry air and warm, calm water. It's also high season, so tours and boats book up earlier.

Winter: December to February

Days reach about 29 °C / 83 °F in January and nights drop to around 19 °C / 66 °F — pleasant enough for a light sweater on an evening walk along the Malecón. The sea cools to about 25 °C / 77 °F. Humpback whales are in Banderas Bay from December to March, which makes winter the best time for a private boat charter.

Spring: March to May

The driest stretch of the year: March averages 19 mm (0.7 in) of rain and April essentially none. Temperatures climb steadily until May, the hottest month by daytime high at about 32 °C / 90 °F. The water is at its clearest in spring, so it's a great time for paddle boarding and snorkeling around Los Arcos.

Rainy Season Weather in Puerto Vallarta (June–October)

The rainy season — locals call it the green season — changes the landscape completely. The brown hills turn deep green within weeks, rivers run again and the waterfalls in the Sierra Madre come back to life. Highs sit around 31 °C / 88 °F but nights stay warm at about 25 °C / 77 °F, and the humidity is what you feel most.

What a rainy-season day looks like

A typical August day starts sunny and still, gets hot and heavy by noon, clouds over the mountains by mid-afternoon and ends with a short, dramatic storm — often with lightning over the bay — before clearing again at night. Days with steady rain from morning to night happen, but they're the exception. July averages about 23 rainy days, August 27 and September 25.

Hurricane season in Puerto Vallarta

The Eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 to November 30, with most storms between August and October. Banderas Bay is protected by the Sierra Madre and the curve of the coast, so direct hits are uncommon, but a storm passing offshore can mean two or three days of heavy rain, swell and closed beaches. If you travel in this period, keep an eye on the forecast above and leave some flexibility in your plans so a tour can move a day if needed.

Puerto Vallarta Water Temperature

The ocean in Puerto Vallarta is warm all year. Banderas Bay is coolest from February to April at around 25 °C / 76 °F and warmest in August and September, when it reaches about 31 °C / 89 °F — warmer than many swimming pools. ATV tours in the rain

ATV tours run in light rain and many riders prefer them in the green season: the trails are muddy, the river crossings are deeper and the Sierra Madre is at its most beautiful. The private Río Cuale ATV tour lets you choose your start time between 9 AM and 5 PM, so you can pick the morning window before the afternoon storms. Bring a change of clothes — you will get wet either way.

Boat charters and sea conditions

Private boats leave from Nuevo Vallarta Marina and the captain decides the route based on the day's wind and swell. In the dry season the bay is usually calm all morning. In the rainy season, go early and stay flexible: if the port captain closes the bay because of a storm, charters are moved to another day.

Surf and paddle board lessons

Playa La Lancha has a beginner-friendly wave for most of the year, and Los Arcos is sheltered enough for paddle boarding on most mornings. Both lessons are private, so the instructor can move the start time to catch the calmest conditions.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Vallarta for Tours

November to April is the best time for the most reliable weather: little rain, calm seas and comfortable temperatures, plus whales from December to March. It's also the busiest and most expensive time, so book tours and boats a few days ahead.

May and June are hot but mostly dry until mid-June — a good compromise with fewer crowds. July to October is hot, humid and rainy, with lower prices, empty beaches and the greenest jungle of the year; it's the best time for ATV, zipline and horseback tours if you don't mind getting wet.

• All year: light, breathable clothes, swimsuit, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a refillable water bottle.
• December to March: a light sweater or long sleeves for evenings around 19 °C / 66 °F and for early boat departures.
• June to October: a light rain jacket or poncho, quick-dry clothes, sandals you don't mind getting wet and insect repellent.
• For tours: closed shoes for ATV, zipline and horseback tours, a change of clothes, and a dry bag or zip-lock bag for your phone.
